All heroes in the game - with the exception of the Large heroes - belong to one or more Factions. A Faction is a broad category that describes a heroes's nature or outlook and also provides some mechanical benefits in the game.
There are 4 Factions for heroes in the game. They are:
- White: These are "lawful" heroes, including the Chantry and Kingoms like the Dwarves and Ferelden.
- Red: These are "lawless" and "outlaw" heroes (including apostate mages and Qunari), as well as non-blighted creatures.
- Blue: These are sanctioned magic users (like Circle mages) as well as supernatural entities.
- Black: These are demon and darkspawn as well as corrupted or tainted heroes.
You can tell what faction a hero belongs to in a few places. We'll use Morrigan as our example. She belongs to the Red faction and you can see that here on:
The center of their base -
The hero's nameplate -
And in the hero roster -
Some heroes have a mixed nature or influence on them and so will belong to two factions. Grey Warden Carver, for example, is Black and White Faction, denoting his status as a Grey Warden. Split-Faction heroes gain the benefits and vulnerabilities of both Factions they belong to.
Now that we've defined the Factions, what can they do for you?
First, Factions receive a damage bonus when attacking other specific Faction colors. Specifically, the bonuses go like this: White gets a bonus against Red Faction heroes, Red gets a bonus against Blue Faction heroes, Blue gets a bonus against Black Faction heroes, and Black gets a bonus against White Faction heroes.
Split Faction heroes follow the rules for both Factions that they are a part of.
The second bonus is in your squad setup. If you create a squad that contains heroes that are all the same Faction, you get a bonus to your squad's Power. The Rarity of the hero decides how much of a bonus it adds, from +1% up to +5% for heroes that are Common all the way up to Legendary. So for example, a squad of 3 Common heroes and 1 Epic hero of the same Faction would get a +7% bonus.
As noted above, Large heroes do not have a Faction. They will neither add to a squad's power bonus nor get a bonus to attack any other type of Faction.
